Lyophilisation — freeze-drying — removes water from the peptide under vacuum, leaving a dry solid that is far more stable than the same material in solution. A properly lyophilised peptide, stored cold and sealed, has a shelf life measured in years rather than weeks.

The visual appearance of a lyophilised peptide varies more than people expect. Some form a neat white cake that fills the base of the vial. Others collapse into a thin film against the glass, or appear as a scatter of translucent flakes that can look, to an unfamiliar eye, like the vial is nearly empty. This is a function of the peptide's own physical properties and the lyophilisation cycle, not a sign of a problem or a shortfall in quantity. Mass is confirmed by weight, not by how much of the vial the solid appears to occupy. Blends and Stacks

That distinction is not a hedge. It reflects the chemistry. Solid-phase peptide synthesis builds a sequence one amino acid at a time, and each coupling step is efficient but not perfect. A tiny per-step shortfall, compounded across a long sequence, produces a population of closely related impurities — deletion sequences missing a residue, truncated chains, incompletely deprotected fragments — that are chemically similar to the target and therefore difficult to separate from it. For a short, simple peptide, 99%+ is routinely achievable. For a long or awkward one, insisting on 99%+ across the board would mean either not stocking it or quoting a number the data doesn't support.

We have chosen to stock it and tell the truth about it. A supplier who quotes 99%+ on every product in a diverse catalogue is either working with a narrower definition of purity than they've disclosed, or is not being straight with you.

Certificates of Analysis

Every lot Peptide Works supplies has a certificate of analysis tied to it. Not to the product line. To the lot.

That distinction is the single most useful thing in this section, so it's worth dwelling on. A certificate of analysis is a record of what a specific batch of material was found to contain when a specific laboratory tested it on a specific date. It is not a general statement about the product. If a supplier's certificate has no lot number, or has a lot number that doesn't match the vial, or is the same PDF that came with an order two years ago, then whatever it is, it isn't evidence about your material.

A certificate that means something will show you:

The lot or batch number, matching the vial in your hand. If these don't correspond, nothing else on the document is relevant to you.

The date of analysis. Peptides degrade. A certificate from four years ago describes the material as it was four years ago, which is useful context and nothing more.

The analytical methods used, named. Typically HPLC for purity and mass spectrometry for identity. A purity percentage with no stated method is a number without a provenance.

The purity result, as measured — not as specified. There is a meaningful difference between "specification: ≥99%" and "result: 99.3%". The first is an aspiration. The second is a measurement. Certificates that only display the specification are, intentionally or otherwise, telling you nothing about your batch.

The mass spectrometry result, showing the observed molecular weight against the theoretical value for the sequence. This is the identity check. Purity tells you the sample is homogeneous; mass spec tells you it's homogeneously the right thing.

The chromatogram itself, where available. A percentage is a summary. The trace is the evidence. A clean chromatogram with a single dominant peak and a flat baseline tells you something a number cannot, and so does a messy one.

The name of the laboratory and, ideally, a signature or analyst reference.

Independent Third-Party Testing

Internal quality control is necessary — every serious manufacturer runs it — but it is not sufficient, for the obvious reason that a manufacturer testing its own output has an interest in what the test says. Third-party verification removes that conflict. The laboratory has no stake in whether a batch passes. It reports what it observes.

This is a real cost and a real delay. Batches wait on external results. Occasionally an external result contradicts an internal one, and when that happens, the external result wins and the batch does not ship. That has happened. It will happen again. It is the entire point of the arrangement — a verification system that never rejects anything is not a verification system, it is theatre.

How Purity Is Actually Measured

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separates the components of a sample by pushing it through a column packed with a stationary phase. Different molecules interact with that phase differently and therefore emerge at different times. The detector records what comes out and when, producing a chromatogram: a baseline with peaks rising from it, each peak a component of the sample.

Purity, in this context, is the area of the target peak expressed as a percentage of the total area of all peaks. A 99% result means the target compound accounts for 99% of the detected material. It is worth being precise about what that does and does not mean. It means 99% of what the detector saw at that wavelength under those conditions. It does not account for residual solvents, counter-ions, or water content, which are separate measurements. Nobody in the field is hiding this; it is simply what the number means, and knowing what a number means is a prerequisite for using it.

Mass spectrometry ionises the sample and measures mass-to-charge ratio, producing an observed molecular weight to compare against the theoretical weight calculated from the sequence. A match confirms identity. A mismatch — particularly one offset by the mass of a single amino acid — points to a deletion sequence, which is exactly the impurity that solid-phase synthesis is prone to producing.

The two together do the job neither can do alone. HPLC without mass spec tells you the sample is pure without telling you what it's pure of. Mass spec without HPLC tells you the right compound is present without telling you how much else is present alongside it.

Storage, Stability, and Handling

Purity is a snapshot. Stability is what happens afterwards, and it is where a great many well-made peptides are ruined by everything that follows synthesis.

Peptides degrade through several routes. Hydrolysis, where water attacks the peptide bond. Oxidation, which particularly affects methionine, cysteine, and tryptophan residues. Deamidation of asparagine and glutamine. Aggregation, where molecules associate into structures that no longer behave like the monomer. Adsorption, where peptide simply sticks to the walls of its container and quietly leaves solution.

Every one of these is accelerated by heat, by moisture, by light, and by time in solution. Which is why lyophilised material stored cold and sealed is stable for years, and the same peptide reconstituted and left on a bench is a different proposition entirely.

Lot Traceability

Every unit we ship carries a lot number that traces back through our records to the synthesis batch, the analytical documentation, the storage history, and the date it entered our inventory.

This exists for one reason: if something goes wrong, we need to know precisely what else is affected. A supplier who cannot trace a problem to a batch has only two options when a problem surfaces — recall everything, or recall nothing. Both are bad. Anyone can be responsive during a sale. The question is what happens two weeks later, when the material has arrived, the payment has cleared, and you have a question that will take somebody twenty minutes to answer properly and will produce no additional revenue.

Before You Order

We will tell you what is actually in stock, rather than taking an order and sorting it out afterwards. We will give you a lead time we believe, rather than the one that closes the sale. If a compound is on backorder, you will hear that before you pay, not after.

We will send you the certificate of analysis for the current lot before you buy, if you ask. Some suppliers treat this as an unusual request. It should be the standard one. You are being asked to trust a purity figure; it is entirely reasonable to want to see the document behind it first.

We will also tell you when we are not the right supplier for something. If you need a compound we don't stock, or a purity grade we can't reliably hit, or a quantity that doesn't make sense for us to fulfil, we will say so. Sending someone elsewhere costs us an order. Taking an order we can't fulfil properly costs us a customer.

While the Order Is in Transit

You get a tracking number when the parcel ships, and you get an actual human if the tracking stops updating. International shipments do stall — customs holds happen, and they happen to well-documented, entirely compliant parcels for reasons that are often opaque. What we can do is tell you what we can see, chase the carrier, and be honest about the timeline rather than repeating that it's "on its way" until it either arrives or doesn't.

After It Arrives

If the material genuinely isn't right, we will make it right. Not after an argument. Not after you have proven a negative. If a Peptide Works product doesn't meet the specification we sold it under, that is our problem to solve, and the fastest way to solve it is usually to replace the material and investigate afterwards rather than the other way round.

Peptides ship cold. Ours are packed with insulation and coolant sized to the route, not to a single generic standard, because a two-day domestic shipment and a nine-day international one with an unpredictable customs stop are not the same problem and should not receive the same box.

Vials are packed to survive handling that is rougher than anyone would like to imagine. Glass in transit is glass in transit, and the failure mode is not usually a dramatic drop but the slow accumulation of vibration and pressure over a long haul. Padding, rigid outer packaging, and vials that are not free to move against one another are how that gets prevented.

We also pack against moisture, because a peptide that has been kept beautifully cold and has quietly absorbed atmospheric water through a compromised seal is not in better condition than one that got warm.
